One of the coolest mine tours in Arizona takes you 500 feet below the surface to explore a fluorescent, multicolored mineral wall that illuminates the darkness in a truly breathtaking way. Part a replica mining town built from salvaged relics and materials, it’s one Wild West adventure you won’t soon forget!
Located north of Yuma, the Castle Dome Mining Museum protects the remnants of a late-1800s mining town.
Visitors get the rare opportunity to step back in time to the Wild West, touring a saloon, blacksmith shop, and other buildings typically found in a rough-and-tumble mining town. You'll even see original relics salvaged from the surrounding area!
This naturally fluorescent mineral wall features bright, neon colors that you'll swear are man-made. Ultraviolet lights help illuminate the rainbow of striking hues for a viewing experience you'll never forget.
Not only is the mine an incredible sight to behold, but the tour itself is also extremely thorough and intimate. Small groups of no more than 12 are driven to the site in an ATV before boarding an underground vehicle known as "the man trap."
From there, you'll descend 500 feet below the surface into the comfortable (80-85 degrees year-round) mine to explore not only the fluorescent wall, but also a silver vein, desperado hideout, and other noteworthy attractions.
The friendly, knowledgeable tour guides really bring the whole experience together. They're always happy to answer your questions, and their animation and excitement are almost palpable.
Have you ever explored the fluorescent mine at Castle Dome? If so, we’d love to hear all about your experience in the comments! Don’t forget to check out our previous article for a nearby haunted prison tour that will send chills down your spine.
