I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
Hiking is a great way to escape, connect with nature, and reconnect with ourselves. And those are only a few of the reasons why it’s such a popular activity for many people. Another is the challenge of it. If you’re up for a challenge on a rugged and remote hiking trail in Arizona, head to Flagstaff where you can trek up to Humphreys Peak. If you're up for a challenge and are physically able to, the trek to Humphreys Peak in Flagstaff is rugged and remote and well worth it. Humphreys Peak has the highest summit within the 18,960-acre Kachina Peaks Wilderness at 12,643 feet.
The elevation gain to the peak is 3,382 feet, so keep that in mind as you prepare for this hike which should only be attempted by seasoned hikers. This trail is best traveled between April and October.
The trail begins through a forest of ponderosa pine trees but it's also rocky and roots can be a tripping hazard. Keep that in mind when choosing your footwear for this hike...you'll certainly need a pair of sturdy hiking boots.
When you head further up the trail and out of the forest, there's no cover at this point and you'll be exposed to the elements. If hiking this trail in the late summer, afternoon storms are common. The earlier in the day you can hike during this time of year, the better.
Not only that but you'll have some of the most spectacular views in the state. From the San Francisco Peaks to the Grand Canyon, you'll be in awe of what you can see from the top of Humphreys Peak.
