One of the best hikes in Arizona is a little-known trail that leads to a magical landscape you had no idea exited in the Grand Canyon State. Marvel at a vast, undulating gorge, Joshua trees, and a pristine river when you embark on the Scenic Gorge Overlook Trail near Littlefield. This easy loop looks like something from your wildest dreams!
Welcome to the little-known Scenic Gorge Overlook Trail!
Located in the Virgin River Canyon Recreation Area, this gorgeous hike is nestled right up near the Arizona-Utah border (it's also very close to Nevada).
Since the trail butts up against our neighbors to the north and west, the landscape is very different than what we're used to seeing in Arizona. You'll discover a whole new side to the Grand Canyon State when you embark on this journey.
The hike is only 1/3-mile long, and it has an elevation gain of just 19 feet. For this reason, it's suitable for most ages and skill levels (and dogs!).
The partially paved trail leads to a scenic overlook that provides views of the gorge and the Virgin River below. Here, you'll also see informative signs detailing the area's unique history, geology, and ecology.
A small fee is required to use the trail, which also gives visitors access to picnic tables, ramadas, and bathrooms with flush toilets. You can even enter the river from here!
You can access the trail via the Cedar Pockets exit on the south side of Interstate 15 (Mile Marker 18). For more information about the Virgin River Canyon Recreation Area, visit the Bureau of Land Management website.
