I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
City life isn’t for everyone. Some of us crave a life in a place where we can feel at peace instead of being bombarded with the frenetic energy of a city. Growing up in a rural town on the East Coast, I craved big-city life for a long time and, eventually, lived in some of the biggest cities in the country including Los Angeles, New York City, and, now, the Phoenix area. Now that I’m older, I crave living in a more peaceful town. While I can’t move just yet, I tend to take day trips to small towns around the state. If you’re craving a peaceful place to live in Arizona, take a look at Clifton. Located in Southern Arizona, Clifton is a charming and quiet community for those who live there.
The town of Clifton had its beginnings in 1873 with the discovery of copper in the area. Copper mines were established and settlers came in droves to find their fortune.
Businesses and shops opened and the town flourished, even after the mining industry dried up. Today, the town has a strong sense of community and is a peaceful place to be.
Located along the Coronado Trail close to the Arizona-New Mexico border and also by the Mogollon Rim, Clifton is picture-perfect. The town also sits at the confluence of the San Francisco River and Chase Creek.
The town is also quite historic with numerous preserved buildings throughout. Pictured here, for example, is the former Arizona and New Mexico Railway Passenger Station which was built in 1913 at a time when the town grew to 20,000 residents.
Over time, however, mining and the population dwindled and it was closed as a train station. Today, it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Take a stroll down Chase Creek Street in Clifton and you'll see numerous historic buildings as well as a few shops, a church, and places to dine.
While the town is as charming as can be, there's plenty of nature to explore in the area. Why not go for a hike and see what wildlife species you can spot?
Today, Clifton's population is around 3,700 people and is considered safe with a low cost of living. And if you're looking for a peaceful yet remote place to visit or live, consider Clifton, Arizona.
