I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
Arizona is home to countless incredible restaurants, bakeries, and delis. But few things are as satisfying as a sandwich. With hearty meats, veggies, cheeses, and sauces piled high between two slices of fresh bread, there are few better places to grab a sandwich than an old-school deli in Arizona. DeFalco’s in Scottsdale is a popular Italian market with a deli hiding inside. And its old-world, old-school feel only enhances the experience.
If you're visiting DeFalco's has been a local institution since 1972. Its first location was at 44th and Thomas in Scottsdale before moving to 68th and Thomas. Today, this iconic mom-and-pop market is located just south of Old Town at Scottsdale Road and Oak Street.
DeFalco's has garnered such an incredible reputation that it was featured on an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.
Peruse this incredible Italian store for all kinds of imported and homemade pasta, sauces, freshly made sausages, and so much more. I felt as though I was transported to Italy once I stepped through the doors on my first visit!
If you come here hungry, step on up to the deli counter and place your order. Keep in mind, though, that the line may be long. With its wide selection of pizza, pasta, and hot and cold sandwiches on the menu, there are so many delicious options. But do yourself a favor and order a sandwich.
This is the Il Purista (translation: "the purist") sandwich made with prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, tomato, roasted peppers, extra virgin olive oil, and balsamic vinegar. You'll love the flavors of this hearty sandwich.
If you're in the mood for a hot sandwich, one of the cheesesteaks is always a good bet. Beef or chicken, the meat is thinly sliced and topped with cheese that's melted to perfection. Feel free to add some fried peppers, onions, and mushrooms to yours.
If you're looking for a vegetarian option, the Caprese Sandwich is hard to beat. Layered between your choice of bread are generous slices of fresh mozzarella, tomato, and basil. Delicious!
