Given Arizona’s rich mining history, it’s no surprise our state is filled with cemeteries. One such graveyard is located in Bisbee, one of the most notorious towns for workers perishing underground. Rumors have it their spirits still walk these very grounds today, seeking vengeance for their untimely deaths. Check it out… if you dare.
Bisbee is a charming little town of just over 5,000 residents that is known for its undeniable quirkiness. Despite how lively and upbeat the city is today, its roots are steeped in the mining industry - meaning a fair amount of tragic deaths have taken place here.
Due to the area's rich mining history, employees that came to Bisbee from all over the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Europe are buried here. It's rumored that restless spirits still walk these very grounds, seeking vengeance for their untimely deaths.
Many of the headstones are made from actual ore excavated from the underground copper mines. It's a nice way to honor those who perished while working to further an industry responsible for much of Bisbee's success.
Evergreen Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 by the U.S. Department of the Interior. This ensures its preservation, allowing a crucial piece of our state's past to remain standing.
