I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
There’s no doubt that Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is home to some of the most stunning landscape in Arizona. It seems as though everywhere you look and everywhere you explore within Glen Canyon is awe-inspiring. Much of the landscape looks as though it was created by an artist. Although we could argue that Mother Nature is a true artist. One thing I know for sure is that you must visit and see how truly inspiring and captivating Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is.
Straddling the border of Arizona and Utah, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area encompasses 1.25 million acres. At one end of the park is Lees Ferry, Arizona while the other end is found in Southern Utah.
Found within Glen Canyon is Lake Powell, a man-made reservoir along the Colorado River. The lake is over 185 miles long and covers an expanse of 254 square miles with 2,000 miles of shoreline.
While there are ample recreational opportunities on the lake, boating on the lake will give you some of the most spectacular views, ones you will never have from the shore.
And then there's the ultra-iconic Horseshoe Bend, the subject of thousands upon thousands of social media posts. There's perhaps no greater Instagrammable spot in Arizona than Horseshoe Bend.
You can take an easy 1.5-mile trail from parking to get to the overlook with a view of this mesmerizing 270-degree bend in the Colorado River. Don't forget your selfie stick for this one!
Even Glen Canyon Dam is the subject of art. This Arizona has been immortalized in a painting by Norman Rockwell. In fact, he was commissioned by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in 1969 to create the piece.
Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Arizona. Visit and you'll think the landscape was ripped from a painting.
