Hiding in the near-abandoned town of Ajo, Phelps Dodge Hospital saw thousands of miners and gravely ill children meet their demise. Due to this tragic past, it is believed to be a hotspot for ghostly activity and has been visited by paranormal groups, ghost hunters, and even the investigators on Travel Channel’s “Ghost Adventures”… and there is some pretty compelling evidence that it is, indeed, haunted.
Now, you also have the opportunity to join the hunt, as two different businesses, Ghost Hunts USA and Paranormal Dares, are offering two separate dates to take you inside and explore its haunted halls. Whether you’re a believer in the paranormal or are the world’s biggest skeptic, this overnight ghost hunt is full of spine-tingling excitement. Are you brave enough to see what lurks within its hallways?
The long-forgotten town of Ajo was once a successful mining community, promising bountiful wealth to thousands of struggling workers.
Known as New Cornelia Copper Mine, this 1,400-foot-deep abyss swallowed those innocent souls, many of whom would never ascend back to the surface.
Due to the high injury and mortality rate associated with mining, a much-needed hospital was constructed. Ominously sitting atop a hill, this 29,000-square-foot building treated countless patients before shutting down when the mine closed in 1985.

The abandoned hospital was purchased 10 years later by a caretaker that has worked on its upkeep ever since… and boy, does he have some stories to tell.
Restless spirits haunt these hallways, having perished long ago from mining accidents, disease, and even murder. Tragically, many children also died here after falling ill before vaccines were created to treat widespread contagious diseases.
Former miners and hospital patients aren’t the only entities that linger here. Many have also reported seeing spirits from ancient Native American tribes at the ends of corridors.
