If you enjoy local history, there is a heaping dose waiting for you at Barrio Historico Tucson! One of the oldest and best-preserved neighborhoods in the city, this charming destination features colorful adobe homes, lush vegetation, and restaurants that have withstood the test of time.
Next time you find yourself in the Old Pueblo, make plans to spend some time strolling through Barrio Historico.
Located just south of the Tucson Convention Center, Barrio Historico - which translates simply to "historic neighborhood" - is one of the oldest and best-preserved barrios in Arizona.
You'll see adobe houses in an array of vibrant colors, lots of cacti and other lush vegetation, dramatic archways, and many other sights that offer a glimpse into the Tucson of yesteryear.
The area has a very retro feel, completed by classic cars and vintage signs that showcase the past lives of many of the buildings. It's a photo-taking paradise, so don't forget your camera!
Just down the street is the beautiful St. Augustine Cathedral, which is well worth a stop while you're close by. Dating to 1968, the church features Spanish Colonial Revival architecture that furthers the illusion you've traveled south of the border.
For the complete Barrio Historico experience, close out the day with a meal at El Minuto Cafe. Open since the 1930s, this family-owned restaurant is a household name in the neighborhood, and for good reason.
A variety of classic Mexican dishes make up the menu, including a whopping 10 different types of cheese crisps. You simply can't eat here without trying one!
