I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
Hiking in the fall anywhere in the Grand Canyon State is a remarkable adventure. However, it’s not just the cooler air after a grueling summer that entices people to hit the trails. In the higher elevation areas, it’s the fall foliage that’s the big draw. If you’re looking for a spectacular fall foliage hike in Arizona, there’s one in Flagstaff you’ll have to try if you can. It’s not an easy hike but, if you’re able to make the trek, you’ll be rewarded with some incredible fall colors as well as views.
Head to the Coconino National Forest in Flagstaff and take a hike to discover some of the most spectacular fall foliage in the state. The Abineau to Bear Jaw Loop Trail may be a strenuous hike but it's well-worth it to see the jaw-dropping autumn hues along the way.
If you're physically able to tackle this 6.9-mile loop trail with an elevation gain of 1,876 feet, make sure you come prepared with plenty of water, some snacks, a hiking backpack, and a good pair of hiking boots.
If you intend to take on the challenge of this hike in its entirety, make sure to set aside at least 4 hours to complete it and enough daylight as well.
Be sure to time your visit to catch the peak foliage on the trees before they fall to the ground. However, if you happen to miss the aspens and their colorful leaves, you'll still find plenty of beauty along this trail.
