One of America’s most beautiful waterfalls is also one of the most challenging to reach. But that isn’t the only reason why most people will never set eyes upon the spectacular Havasu Falls.
The popular waterfall located on Havasupai tribal lands is one of the most admired waterfalls in Arizona; but most will only experience the falls through the eyes of others.
Aside from the mere challenges of reaching Havasu Falls, a permit is required and must be obtained for visiting the Havasupai Reservation. Then it's an eight mile hike from the hiker's parking lot to Havasupai Village; and another two miles from the village to Havasu Falls.
Overcoming the challenges of getting to Havasu Falls can be a bit much for most. It's also quite a feat to carry 15-20 pounds on your back, too. But many don't realize there are easier ways to get to Havasu Falls...
For a fee, you can bypass the first eight miles of the hike by hopping aboard one of the daily helicopters that ferry hikers and their gear into and out of Havasupai Village. This scenic (and easy) option is a mere ten minute ride and is available weather permitting. You'll still need to obtain a permit, but your feet (and knees) will thank you for skipping the initial drop down into the canyon and the seven-plus miles that follow.
You could also hire a pack mule to either carry your belongings, or both you and your belongings. Upon arrivla, you may be a little sore in places, but your feet and knees won't be the likely spots where you'll feel the pain.
Many people choose to hire a guide or take a guided trip to the falls... most of these trips take the worry and hassle of meals, permits and lodging off your mind and arrange everything for you so you can relax and just enjoy the adventure.
Even with so many ways to get to Havasu Falls, most people will never have the chance to see one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Arizona. Have you been? We'd love to know and to see your photos!
