Arizona has no shortage of hikes to choose from. Some are intense mountain climbs, while others, like the one we’re highlighting today, take you on a magical woodland adventure through lush greenery and towering red rock canyons. West Fork Trail in Sedona is an enchanting stroll to embark on all year long.
While we typically center our focus on lesser-known hikes, the iconic West Fork Trail is an exception. Hidden in the Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness, this place is an incredible outdoor adventure that belongs on every Arizonan's bucket list.
Clocking in at little more than seven miles, the trail's length says little about its difficulty. An easy hike with minimal elevation gain proves suitable for the whole family, making it a perfect opportunity to get the kiddos outside before school starts again.
The entire path is lined with trees that form a canopy overhead and protect hikers from the sweltering desert sun. Evergreen in nature, they offer eye-popping views no matter what time of year it is.
Rock walls rise up in every direction as you meander through the canyon, keeping an element of surprise at every twist and turn. Their deep redness contrasts strikingly against the lush flora, creating a scene that can only be described as picture-perfect. While the trail isn't very well-marked, simply following the water works every time if you happen to get lost.
Several interesting features are scattered throughout, including this pitch-black tunnel. What's inside? Our guess is as good as anyone's, so it looks like you'll have to do some exploring!
Don't forget to bring water shoes, as you'll cross the river about 13 times in total. A large creek awaits at the trail's end, beckoning hikers to jump in and cool off before trekking back out.
