Arizona is full of charming small towns, but this hidden gem just might be our favorite. From a historic bed and breakfast to delicious down-home cooking, Duncan is a perfect day trip destination.
Duncan was first established in 1883, when railroad expansion was at its peak. Like many settlements, it grew until highway construction began redirecting traffic southward and leaving this once-thriving Gila River community to slowly wither away.
Now, it’s a tiny farm town with not more than a handful of operative buildings. Even so, what little activity that remains here evokes a certain Southwestern charm that can’t be found elsewhere.
Take Rock-A-Buy Rocks & Gifts, for example. Navajo jewelry, petrified wood, and gorgeous minerals are sold in this unassuming building, just waiting to be discovered.
By far the most noteworthy attraction is the Simpson Hotel. This long-standing Duncan icon has been around for nearly a century, serving as a gateway to the mystical surrounding desert landscape.
Every room has its own unique theme, making for a choose-your-own-adventure scenario. Rates range from $50 to $100 a night, including one meal per person.
