If you’re a diehard nature lover, chances are you feel like you’ve discovered all there is to see – even the little-known hiking trails in Arizona you had to search high and low to find. Sometimes, however, hidden gems are hiding right under our noses – like at Phoenix Mountains Preserve, in the heart of our capital city. Lookout Mountain Circumference Trail is a short-and-sweet loop that offers unparalleled city and nature views, and it’s one of the least-trafficked hikes in the park.
One of the least-trafficked trails within Phoenix Mountains Preserve, the Lookout Mountain Circumference Trail is something of a hidden gem - despite being located in Arizona's largest - and capital - city.
This 2.2-mile loop is considered moderately difficult, with an elevation gain of just under 300 feet. It snakes around Lookout Mountain - hence the name of the trail - and offers unparalleled city and nature views.
Lookout Mountain Circumference Trail is best completed during the cooler months of the year, as there is little-to-no shade available. Early spring is also a good time - and you'll get the added bonus of seeing all sorts of colorful blooms!
If you complete the hike around Christmastime, you'll often see ornaments adorning the barren trees along the path. What a way to spread holiday cheer!
No matter what time of year you decide to embark on the trail, you'll feel a bit like you've discovered something new. Revel in the abundant sounds of nature - a rare treat in the big city - and breathe in the fresh mountain air while you enjoy your stroll.
Time your hike just right, and you'll be in for some truly remarkable sunset views. Sit down for a spell and take in the scenery - the trail is short, after all, so no need to rush.
