Overseas travel is expensive, but your taste buds can take a trip around the world without even leaving Arizona. From world-class sushi to traditional Mexican dishes, authentic eats abound here in the Grand Canyon State. However, if you’re looking for something a little more unique, Old Town Sarajevo in Phoenix is a Bosnian restaurant that serves up Eastern European delicacies in a cozy, welcoming environment. It’s not every day that you come across Bosnian cuisine, so this is one spot you simply have to taste.
You may have passed this unassuming strip center countless times without even entertaining the thought of stopping… but after seeing the delicious ethnic cuisine waiting inside, you'll never make that mistake again.
Modeled after a quaint Bosnian village, the Old World charm is impossible to deny. Red and white tablecloths, elegant wooden doors with ornate knockers, and tons of themed decor take diners on a journey overseas.
Grab a seat and let your eyes wander, taking in all the intriguing sights of an unfamiliar culture. Don't be afraid to chat up a regular or your server, as they're always more than happy to share tidbits of information about the Bosnian heritage.
Cevapi is a Bosnian delicacy and the most popular menu item at Old Town Sarajevo. It's a massive, fluffy flatbread filled with lamb and beef sausages and served over onions. Pair it with a cup of strong Turkish coffee and you're all set for one of the best meals you’ll ever eat.
Sour cream and a tangy eggplant and red pepper dip accompany the dish. While you may be inclined to eat it like a sandwich, the proper way to dig in is to rip off chunks of bread and dunk it in the sauces. The different textures and flavors compliment each other perfectly, making for an unforgettable culinary experience.
Other favorites include cabbage rolls, beef stew, and stuffed pitas - and leaving without a generous piece of baklava for dessert would be an absolute sin.
