This One Easy Hike In Arizona Will Lead You Someplace Unforgettable
Long, strenuous hikes can be a fun and rewarding experience but sometimes a less strenuous hike is in order. If you’re on the lookout for a relatively easy hike that doesn’t skimp on beautiful views, you will definitely want to try out this one: the West Fork of Oak Creek Trail.

The maintained and most popular section of West Fork measures just over three miles long. It is a level trail that follows Oak Creek through a narrow canyon, lush forest, and other dramatically beautiful natural features. The trail, which is relatively easy, also requires crossing the creek in shallow areas. This can be done by traipsing stepping stones or even just stepping into the water itself.

Thankfully, the trail is well-marked for the first three miles so that you can easily determine where to turn around. A round trip hike will take an average of two to three hours. However, you can also opt to continue past the maintained trail if you suddenly desire a longer or more strenuous hike. The overall path continues for 14 miles down the canyon and stream into the Red Rock Wilderness.

The trail is popular throughout the year and when you see it for yourself, you’ll understand why. However, most people will agree that fall is certainly the most stunning time to visit. During this season, the rich variety of colors explodes: trees are covered in an array of colors that range from evergreen shades to the warm red and yellow tones that go along with the red canyon walls.

There’s even a chance to see the ruins of the old Mayhew Lodge, which operated from 1926 to 1968. It once served as a resting area for a hefty price of $15 per day to a wide range of guests such as Jimmy Stewart, Maureen O’Hara, and Walt Disney. You won’t find much evidence of this today as only the ruins of the lodge remain, as shown in this photo above.

Think you might want to check out Oak Creek Canyon yourself? Keep in mind that you will need day-use passes. Fees at Oak Creek Canyon are $10 per vehicle while people walking, cycling, or riding a bus to the area will only be charged $2. Also, if you want to avoid crowds, consider visiting in spring, fall, or on a weekday.
