The hot dog is a quintessential American dish; it’s a popular street food that has strong associations with backyard grilling, sports games, eating contests, and even the oddly-shaped Wienermobile. Different regions and cities have their own version of how a hot dog should be served.
And, what do you know? We have a regional version as well! The Sonoran dog’s origins are a little contested but it probably comes from Sonora, Mexico. Either way, it has become synonymous with southern Arizonan cuisine.
The hot dog is a tasty wiener wrapped in bacon, usually served in a bolillo bun topped with beans, tomatoes, onions, mayonnaise, mustard, and peppers. If you haven’t had the fortune of taking a bite of one of these mouthwatering hot dogs, you’re in luck! Today we’re going to take a look at some fantastic places to get a Sonoran dog in Arizona.
At this little food stand, you can get two for one hot dogs on Wednesdays. Just be sure to arrive in the early afternoon as the stand often sells out by 3pm!
Yum! You’ll find this food stand sitting in a gas station parking lot but don’t let that deter you from buying a meal from this place. It is well-known as one of the best places in the state to get a Sonoran dog.
Hot dogs aren’t the only item on the menu here but it’s definitely one of the reasons to visit! BK has two locations but the little spot on 12th Avenue with the happy hot dog standing out front is where you want to try their dogs.
In case you couldn’t guess, Tucson is the city that truly embraced the Sonoran dog. This food stand on the south side serves one of the best versions you’ll find and it has been featured in plenty of TV shows.
Address: Multiple locations but try the one at 5201 S 12th Ave in Tucson.
If you ever happen to find yourself hungry in Eloy, this is one spot you’ll want to try. The Sonoran dog here is large and, while not served in the bolillo bun, will definitely satisfy any food craving you’re having.
This cash-only establishment is the first place I had a Sonoran dog years ago. The cash-only establishment is found in central Mesa and serves not only the classic Sonoran dog but also a few other versions. They’re all delicious!
Looking for a late night meal in central Phoenix? This hot dog stand will definitely hit the spot with theirs smothered in toppings that are a little different from your standard Sonoran dog, including guacamole and mushrooms.
This humble little spot serves a variety of hot dogs but the Sonoran definitely stands out.
Address: 705 W 4th St, Benson
Sonoran dogs are awesome but if you’re looking for a more traditional Arizona dish, you might want to check out our list that features some amazing restaurants to find chimichangas.
