When people decide to move to a new town, one of their top criteria includes looking for safe locations. There’s lots of different criteria that can be found that will justify why certain towns and cities were designated as “safest.”
For this list, we’re going to look at data compiled by the FBI in 2013 to determine the safest towns and cities based on the crimes reported to police. (Completed 2014 data has not been released just yet.) We calculated the crime per resident ratio to come up with a slightly more accurate rate instead of just listing the lowest number of reported crimes.
Florence had 222 crimes reported in 2013, which sounds like a lot until you consider the city’s population. The city had just over 8 crimes for every 1000 residents.
The least populous town on this list had an equally low crime rate of 11 per 1000 residents. A mere 15 crimes were reported in 2013, 8 of which were theft.
Sahuarita had a similar population to Florence but a slightly higher crime rate. A total of 366 crimes were reported (nearly all of them were property crimes) and a rate of 13.7 per 1000 residents.
The most populous town on this list, Gilbert is also the safest in the Phoenix-metro area. With a total of 3,665 crimes reported in 2013, this comes out to about 16 for every 1000 residents.
The crime rate for this area was 17 per 1000 residents and the most reported were theft at 146, followed by burglary.
So, do you agree with the FBI’s finding? What cities do you think should have or, alternatively, should not have made the list? Let us know in the comments.
