New to the Grand Canyon State? Welcome! You’ll find that life here is pretty good and the culture here is a little more relaxing than it probably was in your home state. (I think it’s all the sunshine.) If you want to stay on our good side, here are a few things that people say or do (or, in the case of number one, what nature does) that make us annoyed or even angry.
Why is it 100 degrees at the end of October in Phoenix? I just want to wear a sweater and drink some hot tea outside without feeling like I’m melting under an August sun.
While the entire state isn’t one huge desert, much of our land is arid and our water resources are limited so incorporating water conservation into our day life should be second nature. And don’t think that because agriculture uses 70% of the water supply, that you should be able to have a deep green lawn.

This one is actually funny because Arizonans know how diverse the landscape is and that this land is far more mountainous than most people would imagine.

We have culture, thank you very much. It ranges from the expected highbrow version that revels in ballet and museum galleries to our traditional Western concoction with rodeos and Indigenous art to some very of the moment hipster and street art you’ll find along Grand Avenue and other artist-driven communities.

Our public education system could be better funded and test scores could improve but you know what? We also have top performing high schools and colleges that rank among the best in the country.
Performance happens in waves so whichever team wasn’t so hot last season may do better the next. We’re optimistic. 😀
I think all states complain about this but please learn to drive and heed flash flood warnings.

Native Arizonans have a love-hate relationship with these folks. They do a lot for the economy by traveling during peak season, paying real estate taxes, etc. But there’s also that thing about driving and neighborhood favorites suddenly becoming more crowded.
Most of these folks are okay, it’s the ones who clearly don’t enjoy living in Arizona. You’re welcome to move back to New Jersey.
