I’m a firm believer that if you want to learn more about a place or culture, then eat! Food can tell you so much about a place: how it’s made, the combination of textures and flavors, and the quality of ingredients are just a few details you can learn from a meal.
So what does a meal in Arizona tell visitors and newcomers about our home state? Hopefully, it details the diverse cultures, the warm weather, and unique plants that can be found around here. Here are a few restaurants that not only do just that but also happen to serve meals that are just plain tasty!
This multi award-winning restaurant doesn’t focus on just Sonoran-style Mexican food but you can tell the meals here are cooked with love. The food is hearty yet fresh and every bite is an absolute delight for your palate.
Local produce, regional ingredients, and a seasonal menu all make the food at this restaurant simply amazing. The menu here is a bit pricey but is worth the splurge for a New American dining adventure.

If you don’t want to eat the same meal twice when visiting a restaurant, then you’ll love the spontaneous dining at Cafe Poca Cosa. The menu changes twice each day and you’ll find the imaginative Mexican cuisine delicious.
If you’ve ever been to El Charro in Tucson, then you’ll enjoy the trendy dining at Charro Steak, a restaurant operated by the same folks. You won’t find a meal dripping in sauce and cheese but the meals have a heavy Mexican influence and some imaginative takes on your favorite dishes.
You may not see an actual blue cat wandering around the restaurant but the name captures the quirky feeling of the menu. Specializing in tapas, El Gato Azul infuses a Southwestern taste into Spanish and Italian dishes.
If you’re looking for ridiculously good Mexican food that is unique and comforting, check out Elvira’s in Tubac. This little restaurant has been serving food since 1927 and is known for their incredible mole.
Another restaurant inspired by our most popular regional cuisine, Elote Cafe definitely serves some tasty elote as well as plenty of other delicious dishes. The meats are tender, the sauces luxurious, and you can wash it all down with some tasty drinks.
Hopefully this family-owned restaurant has found its final home after hopping around central Phoenix for a couple years. If you’re curious to try out some Native American cuisine, the Fry Bread House is a great place to start. You’ll find massive servings of fry bread and Indian tacos, as well as soups, tamales, and other favorites.
This upscale eatery is located in the Wild Horse Pass Resort in Chandler and is both a five-star and five-diamond restaurant. You’ll find the meals influenced by Southwestern and Indigenous cuisine bursting with incredible presentation and flavor.
Located inside the La Posada Hotel along Route 66 in Winslow, this is among the tastiest fine dining you’ll find in northern Arizona. The meals here are delicious and influenced by regional ingredients and the dishes of local tribes.
