If you didn’t already know, Arizona is filled with plenty of long-abandoned places, including many that are purportedly haunted. In addition to the long list of haunted hotels, bars, and towns, there is at least one old sheriff’s office and jail you can tour in central Arizona that is home to some spooky tales. Let’s take a look!
This is the old Gila County Sheriff’s Office and Jail, established in Globe back in 1910, two years before statehood when this area was still known as Arizona Territory.
Even in those days, vigilantism of the Wild West was finally fading in favor of due process and this was especially evident when the jail was built right next to the county courthouse.
In fact, an open catwalk leading between the courthouse and jail showcased the move towards a more proficient judicial system.
When the facility was in use, prisoners would be publicly walked between the two buildings for crimes ranging from theft to murder.

The jail saw its last prisoner in 1981, but these days you can take a guided tour of the jail daily by appointment or on the second Saturday each month.
During the tours, you can explore the jail in further detail by checking out the restored old cells, preserved prisoner etchings on the walls, and even experience a simulated lockdown.
Offered on the second Friday of each month, the tours give you a chance to check for EVPs, strange apparitions, and learn about hauntings that reportedly happen on a regular basis in the old jail.
Even if you don't believe in ghosts, the paranormal tours will still send a shiver up your spine!
The 1910 Gila County Sheriff’s Office and Jail is located at 149 East Oak Street in Globe. You can find details about historical and haunted tours by visiting their Facebook page and information about the seasonal haunted jail experience on their website.
