French fries are seriously an underrated side dish—they accompany a plethora of main dishes and coming across a perfect batch is much rarer than you might imagine. I usually get fries as a side with burgers, gyros, and other main courses, so I know how disappointing it is to bite into a fry that is undercooked, overcooked, cooked in stale oil, or just sat way too long under a heat lamp. Here are eight places where you can find fries that are not only perfectly cooked—with just the right level of crispness—but are made even more perfect with toppings!
French fries aren’t even French so why not try an Italian version of our favorite potato dish? The patatine fritte at Andreoli Italian Grocer is one tasty option which features fried potato slices topped with leeks and served with a side of tartar sauce.
You can’t categorize this restaurant’s cuisine to just one geographical region, it covers Scandinavian, Polish, Canadian, and German foods. Beaver Choice is known for its poutine, a dish traditionally consisting of fries, cheese curds, and a brown gravy. You’ll get the real deal here without any frills or pizazz.
You know what’s a popular fry flavor at the moment? Truffle, that fancy, expensive ingredient that make you wonder just how ridiculous expensive food may be. One bite of these French-style fries, however, will have you rethinking that thought. These are topped with a healthy dose of parmesan cheese and black truffle in a tall cone alone or as a side and served with a dipping sauce of your choice.
These Belgian-style fries are served hot, crispy, and with a flavorful side of dipping sauce. The flavors in the sauce range from ranch to pesto to a hatch chile mayo. Yum!
If you have a hankering for fries but not quite sure if you want toppings or not, then you might want to head over to Joe’s. They serve perfectly crispy fries that are served plain, topped with a garlic-herb dressing, as a deconstructed baked potato, or even with sweet potatoes. No matter which you choose, you’re sure to have some really tasty dishes!
Every region has its own style of fries and carne asada is definitely one of ours here in the Southwest. If you’ve never had the pleasure of taking a bite of carne asada fries, let the dish at Nico’s be your introduction. We couldn’t find a picture of the fries here but know they are tasty!
This restaurant specializes in serving upscale comfort food so you can expect your fries to be served just right! Here, you’ll receive a tall order of fries almost overflowing a basket. They are cooked crispy to order and served with just a hint of sea salt, perfect if you’re a french fry purist!
This late-night haunt is known for its tiny dining area and New American cuisine that reimagines some of your favorite dishes and gives them a little twist to give your palate a little something new. The same thing goes for the poutine here, which is served in a Midwestern style with country gravy (instead of brown) and shredded cheddar cheese (instead of curds). The dish is different and a surprise for most tastebuds.
