Arizona is composed of more than 113,000 square miles, and yet a considerable amount of that remains unseen by many Arizonans. If you’re looking to get a closer look at the unique places of our beautiful state, here’s a look at a few that will get you into an exploring mood. Check it out!
1. Antelope Canyon
Slot canyons don’t look like much from above, but once you're underground in places such as Antelope Canyon, you can get another perspective of earth. Since slot canyons tend to be notorious locations for flash floods, you will want to take precautions and schedule a tour in advance. Tour reservations for Antelope Canyon can be made at the
Navajo Nation Parks & Recreation website .
2. Casa Grande Ruins
If you’re looking to become the next Indiana Jones, a visit to the Casa Grande Ruins to strengthen your archaeological skills is a must. You can opt for a guided or self-guided tour, along with a stop at the visitor center to get more in-depth knowledge about the place.
3. The Grand Canyon
When most people visit the Grand Canyon, they often make a quick visit to the South Rim. Make your tour longer by exploring other areas of the canyon, such as hiking down into the canyon or visiting the North Rim or West Rim. Making these extra journeys will introduce you to areas most other people won’t see in person.
4. Grand Canyon Caverns
If you want a completely different perspective of the Grand Canyon, going underground is a great place to start. The largest dry caverns in the U.S. are typically seen in a 45-minute guided tour. However, if you are feeling more adventurous, you can do more in-depth tours when you make a
tour reservation .
5. Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail
Curious what the Spaniards saw when they first arrived in the lands now known as the United States? This 1,200 mile trail dates from 1775 and travels from Nogales to San Francisco. Check out the
National Park Service website to see how to best travel along the trail.
6. Mogollon Rim
An Arizona favorite for hiking, the Mogollon Rim and the entire transition zone area in central Arizona is a unique area flanked by two forms of desert regions. There are plenty of quiet, secluded areas to explor--and you'll be surprised by the amount of varied history and landscapes that you will find in the area.
7. Petrified Forest National Park
One of my favorite aspects of Petrified Forest is that the park is expansive enough that it can satisfy both your thirst for knowledge and exploration in multiple trips. There are plenty of hiking areas to explore, historical markers and sights and an amazing collection of geological formations within a relatively short land area.
8. Superstition Mountains
Most people in the Phoenix area only see the Superstition Mountains from afar where it still seems rugged and potentially dangerous. If you’re feeling adventurous, a day hike in the area is rough--but the rare sights are worth the effort.
Which of these places do you look forward to exploring further in the future? Let us know which location and what you hope to find!
