Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
There are so many discoveries that have been made around the Grand Canyon State. From natural wonders to dinosaur bones, from hidden gems to archaeological finds, the state has been chock full of fascinating things over time. One incredible archaeological discovery in Arizona that put the town of Marana on the map happens to be the oldest agricultural canal system in the country.
The town of Marana is located in Pima County just northwest of the city of Tucson. Today, it is home to nearly 55,000 residents and several important archaeological sites, one of which was discovered in recent years.
The oldest agricultural irrigation system in the United States was discovered here in Marana. This discovery was such an important one that it changed what we knew about the history of the area.
Known as "Las Capas," the canals were part of a civilization that lived in the area and farmed the land between 2,500 to 4,200 years ago. The sophisticated system is 4,000 years old.
It was found in an area around the I-10 and Ina Road in Marana and covers over 100 acres. The irrigation system was meant for the farming of maize and proved there was large-scale farming here earlier than previously thought -- further proving how important this discovery is.
Las Capas was such an important discovery along the Santa Cruz River that it was given the Santa Cruz Valley National Heritage Area designation in 2018.
