On the edge of the charming downtown area in Skagway runs the Yakutania Point Trail, an easy stroll off the main drag. A good length to stretch y our legs, this trail hugs the seaside and offers fresh breezes and killer views. To find the trail, walk west along 1st Avenue and turn left at Main Street, then travel
south two blocks and follow the sidewalk
west past the airport terminal.
Head across the foot bridge over the Skagway River and turn left, following the trail through alder forest. The path is smooth and level the whole way.
Continue along down some rock steps, past the picnic shelter where rock outcroppings provide a view looking down the Lynn Canal toward the Chilkat Mountains.
Harbor seals flock to the tidal flats along the trail. Wildlife abound including terns and Harlequin ducks. The air will also be home to many kinds of coastal birds.
Yakutania Point offers beautiful views of the Taiya Inlet and the mouth of the Skagway River, with the Chilkat Mountains rising in the background. The trail is best to use from April through September.
