The Wrangell Mountains are to the northwest of the Saint Elias Mountains and northeast of the Chugach Mountains. The range was named after explorer, president of Russian-American Company, and admiral Ferdinand von Wrangel.
The Wrangell Mountains are almost entirely volcanic in origin, and they include the second and third highest volcanoes in the United States, Mount Blackburn and Mount Sanford.
The Wrangell Volcanic Field spreads over 2,000 square miles is made up of thousands of lava flows and some of the highest peaks in North America, including Mount Wrangell, one of the largest (by volume) active volcanoes in the world.

The Wrangell Mountains Center is just a few minutes from the toe of the Kennicott Glacier. The center is a place for students, writers, artists, scientists, travelers, and local citizens to learn about the mountains.
