You have an almost endless variety of lakes to explore in Alaska, but some are definitely more remote than others. Here’s a little lake that’s close to Skagway, and if you’re willing to put some effort into a strenuous hike, you’ll find a gorgeous setting with crystal clear water.
Skagway is a popular stop for cruise ships, and the tourists pour into town on a regular basis all summer. While some of the area hiking trails can get crowded, there's one that the tourists often skip.
Upper Dewey Lake is a little gem nestled high above Skagway. If you're a local looking for a nearby hike that's not as crowded, or a tourist who's willing to work for some beauty, this is the lake to see.
Once you reach the lake, you'll be delighted by its beautiful blue waters. It's tucked into the base of the mountain, surrounded by trees - a little gem just waiting for you to discover it.
Take all the usual weather precautions when hiking to Upper Dewey Lake. Weather can change quickly, and at that elevation it can get ugly fast. Of course, a few harmless, low-lying clouds just make the lake look even more spectacular.
