The city of Unalaska is located on the stunning Aleutian Islands.
The entire population of the island is a little over 4,000 people, and the area retains a lovely, small town feel. The town is nestled in the hills right along the water.
The town and island have a lot of history.
There are also so many great things to do on this island, like check out the World War II artifacts, or visit the cultural Museum of the Aleutians. You can learn more about the Aleut people who have lived on this island for 10,000 years!
A famous landmark in this area is the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Ascension of Christ.
This beautiful church's construction was completed in 1896. This actually makes it the oldest "cruciform" style Orthodox church in all North America. The stunning dome is regularly photographed, making it an iconic landmark of this area.
One of the most well-known economic drivers of this area is crab fishing out of Dutch Harbor.
Made popular by the show "The Deadliest Catch," this harbor is a great jumping off point for fishing in the area. And if you drop by during crab fishing season, you may even spot the film crews on the docks recording this thrilling profession.
The island is home to many pockets of beauty, like Captain's Bay, which also has incredible fishing.
Some of the best ways to spend your day are looking for wildlife, and there's a huge range of life just under the water's surface. You can spot porpoises, sea otters, and even many species of whale like orcas, humpback, the gray whale, and more.
There's also fantastic birding in this area if you are a fan of checking out the birdwatching, so bring your binoculars.
WIth more than a hundred species, and over 40 million seabirds, you will see a huge amount of these beautiful creatures! There's so many lovely places all over the island to explore and look for wildlife.
