Is there a lot to do in Alaska during the winter?

There is a lot to do in our beautiful state during the winter time! Alaska is truly a winter playground. With international, world class skiing, incredible ice climbing, and alpenglow that will stun you, Alaska is the place to be during the cold winter months. And if you can’t sleep at night, look up! Because the aurora borealis may be dancing across the night sky on extra cold winter nights.

How cold does it get in Alaska during the winter?

It depends on where you are in the state, but winter on average lasts from October through March or April.  It gets very cold in the northern areas of the state, frequently in negatives. You may even see temperatures as low as negative forty or colder! But along the coast you’ll find far more temperate seasons, including winter. You’ll rarely see far below freezing, and you’re more likely to have sleet than snow, although you will find snowstorms periodically through winter.
