The Talkeetna Lakes Trail is comfortable and clearly-marked, winding through the pristine Alaskan wilderness to the six lovely lakes. The three miles of well-established trail are accessible to most everyone.
Just a mile and a half from the Talkeetna Main Street area, these deep woods and crystal lakes seem a million miles away from all civilization.
The Talkeetna Lakes Park is permitted for day-use and no camping, campfires or fireworks are permitted in the area. The trail is ideal for a picnic on a sunny day with a wide, easy path and a gorgeous spot for enjoying the great outdoors.
The park is open while the sun shines, so look for sunrise and sunset times before you head out as they change daily through the summer months.
Canoes are available for day rentals from the Kahiltna Bistro. There's no better way to relax than floating on the glassy water, soaking in the sun.
The trail is a great place to hike and run, drawing many to exercise here throughout the summer. The woods are filled with wildlife, so watch for otters, beavers, bears, foxes, moose, and more than 100 species of birds, including raptors and loons.
The lakes are well-stocked with fish and the water warms up enough for swimming on sunny summer days. In the fall, there is excellent blueberry picking in the area.
The whole park spans 1,040 acres surrounding the lakes, and these deep woods are alive with the wildlife. Spend a day communing with the natural world, exploring the islands and shores of the lake.
The main body of water is known as "X Lake" and the path loops around it. The shores and waters are teeming with loons and kingfishers and the whole area is known as a wonderful place to birdwatch.
