You wouldn’t think to see it in Alaska, but we’ve found our little slice of the Caribbean here in the cold, white, north! Only an hour drive outside of Anchorage has the one of the most fun hidden restaurants in the state. You can find your taste of the equator in this tiny island restaurant inside of Big Lake!
Sometimes you can feel a little stir crazy in Alaska. Many of us travel to warmer climates, especially Hawaii and the Caribbean.
But now we don't have to fly so far! There is a fantastic little island restaurant in the middle of Big Lake, in Wasilla! This cute little restaurant has everything you need to feel like you're hanging around the equator.
In the winter, Big Lake freezes over and "ice roads" are created on the surface of the lake.
You can follow these ice roads in your car all the way out to the island. We highly recommend studded tires, chains, or at least four-wheel drive! You can call ahead to get directions on the ice roads, as there aren't any signs on the roads, and it may be disconcerting driving at night.
Even the winter and snow can't dampen the island feeling this great restaurant gives off!
Strung with lights, and with fake palm trees dotting the island, you'll get all warmed up by the time you hit the inside of the restaurant. You can head inside and enjoy the bar, or the pool tables.
In the summer time, there's a fabulous deck outside, complete with straw umbrellas.
This gives you a great view of the dock and lake. You can head out here in the summer by boat! There's plenty of nearby boat rental places if you need to rent, and you don't own your own.
They specialize in many great foods, with large Alaskan sized portions.
You can find anything from salads and steaks, to freshly baked pies. The bar is well stocked, and you can grab your favorite island cocktail while you relax!
Or you can try a hand at some of their island specialities!
The juicy burgers can be ordered with some delicious pineapple and island flavors. Others enjoy the grilled shrimp toppers for salads. They even have live music some nights!
It it truly hard to believe when you are out here in the summer, that you're not enjoying the island life somewhere a lot warmer than Alaska!
You too can have a taste of paradise by visiting them by boat in the summer, or ice road in the winter. Dock at Long Island, Big Lake, Wasilla, Alaska 99652. Make sure to call first, as their hours are completely dependent on the weather and the seasonal changes!
