Kodiak Island has tons of incredible things to do, but we think tide pooling At Fort Abercrombie should be at the top of your to-do list! With stunning views, gorgeous rugged coastline, and tons of rocks to scramble over, you need to visit this gorgeous place at low tide for some of Alaska’s greatest tide pooling!
The Fort is actually listed on the National Register of Historic Places for the historical military structures nearby. The whole area is filled with wildlife, and while tide pooling you may even spot pods of whales cruising by!
This is a great area to kayak, so you can even find small hidden and undisturbed beaches to tide pool in! Alaska has some amazing marine life in and amongst the tide pools for you to discover.

You can expect to find amazing life like sea stars, hermit crabs, and anemones. If you're digging for clams, make sure to fill in the holes! By leaving large mounds of sand you can suffocate other creatures that have burrowed under, and they won't be able to reach the surface for air.

You can see meadows filled with wildflowers like this lupine. The forest is actually a temperate rainforest, and filled with Sitka spruce trees. You'll also be able to spot wild orchids, lilies, and even iris and roses!
There are plenty of trails that will take you throughout the property, bringing you to some incredible historical buildings, including observations posts and a radar tower. There's even the remnants of an old ammo storage bunker!
It was actually abandoned at the end of World War II. In 1969 it was recognized for its stunning natural resources, and made into the park it is today!
