Our state has something for everyone all year long, but there’s something extra special about summer in Alaska. In fact, we think that Alaska in the summer is the best place to be on the planet! And we have seven great reasons that prove there’s nowhere else to be except in the Last Frontier during these fabulous summer months.
1. Fresh Alaskan seafood
King Crab, Alaska salmon, fresh oysters... you name it, we’ve got it. Alaska’s cold water seafood selection is some of the best in the world. In fact, seafood out of our state routinely rates as some of the healthiest and tastiest options you can find across the globe! And we have it right outside our front door, all summer long.
2. Hiking in the Alaskan backcountry
You can hike in the Alaskan backcountry all year long, but summer offers something a little special. The animals are out, you can hike without layering, and it’s easier to tread on ground not covered in snow. And you have long, long days to get in those extra miles under the midnight sun.
3. The midnight sun
Speaking of the midnight sun, this is one of the most incredible aspects of Alaska in the summer. Regardless of where you are in the state, you’ll be wowed with 24 hours of daylight. The light is stronger up north and in the interior, where along the coast you may have a couple hours of "civil twilight," but it’s magical wherever you are in the Last Frontier!
4. Alaska’s incredible wildlife
People come from all over the world to get a look at our unique and amazing wildlife. From grizzly bears, to moose, to caribous and bald eagles, our state is teeming with breathtaking wildlife. We have so many undisturbed areas where the wildlife can live unencumbered by humans. Our state is a wonderful place to see these beautiful creatures in their natural habitats!
5. Kayaking through Alaska’s waters
When everything warms up and melts, there are so many opportunities to explore Alaska’s waterways. Head out onto the ocean, kayak lakes with tidewater glaciers, or just explore some of our massive rivers, and enjoy the scenery while you’re out on the water. Any kind of boating is wonderful to do in the summer in Alaska!
6. Fishing all over Alaska
For many people, summer means fishing! With our incredible selection of seafood, many Alaskans choose to fill their freezer with fish they’ve caught themselves. The state makes it easy and affordable for residents to get their license, and it’s a healthy, fun way to keep us fed throughout the winter.
7. The Alaska State Fair
There’s no better way to end a wonderful Alaskan summer than with a trip to the Alaska State Fair. Vendors show off their artistic talents, incredible food, and amazing growing skills all over the fair. You may even catch a popular band playing a concert. Take a stroll through the barn and pet the animals in the petting zoo, and be amazed by Alaska’s giant vegetables! It’s the official end of summer and your season wouldn’t be complete without it.
