Alaska is truly a nature lover’s paradise, and there is no better way to spend a summer in Alaska than near (or in) the water — whether it’s the ocean, a lake, river, or creek. And where better to soak up the sunshine than at one of Alaska’s incredible creeks? Today, we’re specifically focusing on the area of Ship Creek near the Port of Anchorage, a local fishing hangout and underrated destination perfect for those summer afternoons when you’re short on time, but still want to enjoy both the warm weather and the Alaskan wilderness. Let’s dive in.
This Alaskan river flows from the Chugach Mountains into the Cook Inlet, and lies entirely within the municipality of Anchorage, Alaska, with its upper length traversing Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
Whether you choose to simply admire the beauty of Alaska or hop in the river — wearing waders, of course — to do some salmon fishing, you’re in for a treat at Ship Creek.
Ready to go fishing? From late May to mid-July, you’ll find King Salmon, and from late July through early September, Silver Salmon. Please keep in mind that fishing Ship Creek does require an Alaska Fishing License, and fishing for King Salmon requires a specific stamp.
Others will enjoy simply soaking in the scenery or bird watching. Ocean-fed waters make this the perfect habitat for numerous species of shorebirds and waterfowl.
