Get ready for an epic adventure through Alaska’s wild heart as you cruise along the stunning Knik River route, a waterfront drive in Alaska. This drive is like stepping into a postcard, with jaw-dropping views of mountains, forests, and winding rivers at every turn. From the peaceful charm of Eklutna Tailrace to the grandeur of Knik Glacier views, each stop on this road trip is a chance to soak up the untamed beauty of the Last Frontier.
Begin your adventure at the Eklutna Tailrace, where the turquoise waters of the Knik River flow gently and, depending on the time of year, plenty of people are out fishing. Take a leisurely stroll along the riverbank and enjoy the tranquil ambiance of this serene setting.
Continue your journey to Lookout Point on the Knik River, where you'll be treated to peekaboo views of the glacier-fed river as it winds its way through the rugged landscape, as well as Knik Glacier itself! Marvel at the expansive vistas stretching before you and the mountains towering in the distance.
Make a stop at the historic Old Knik River Bridge, a relic from Alaska's past that offers a glimpse into its rich history. Constructed in 1936 and spanning the Knik River, this iconic bridge provides a picturesque backdrop for photographs and serves as a reminder of the region's pioneering spirit. Abandoned in 1975, it’s a nice walking bridge that offers gorgeous mountain views.
Surprisingly easy to hike to, these small waterfalls are right off Knik River Road. The trail runs alongside a waterfall that seems to span about 100 feet or so. The cascades at the very top are larger and more impressive, but that additional climb can be slippery, especially if it has been recently raining.
The Pioneer Falls Trailhead can be hard to spot; after a turn in the road, there is a black mailbox and a gravel road. Follow the gravel road for about 100 yards until you spot a small parking lot. The falls are a short walk from there!
End your scenic drive at the Alaska Glacier Lodge. Nestled along the stunning beauty of the Knik River Valley, this charming lodge offers cozy accommodations and delectable cuisine crafted from locally sourced ingredients. Dine at their restaurant, Raven’s Perch, book a helicopter tour, or just soak in the views!
