Tis’ the season for all things spooky and positively bone-chilling. If you are a believer in the afterlife, you’ll be amazed by all these well-known places in Alaska where you’re likely to spot a ghost or a looming spirit. Drive down a country road, visit an old restaurant site, go to a local high school, stop by the performing arts auditorium or go for the gold and stay overnight in a haunted hotel. Whatever you do, be sure to stay safe and sleep with one eye open.
1. Historic Downtown Hotel – Anchorage
This historic hotel in downtown Anchorage is known for having so many ghost sightings, they even have a log book in the lobby to keep track of all the encounters.
2. Northwest Arctic Heritage Center – Kotzebue
This beautiful location was once home to tragedy. Here is where a young boy was playing basketball and his ball bounced under a covered area. As he climbed underneath to try and recover the ball he was swept under water from the snow and ice melt-off. Today it is said that if you yell "come and get your ball" that you will actually be able to hear the boy bouncing the ball in the distance. Talk about chills!
3. Van Gilder Hotel – Seward
Seward locals will tell a story of a lady named Fannie who died in the hotel in the 1950s. Room 209 is said to be haunted. Would you be brave enough to stay in it overnight?
4. Buckner Building – Whittier
This old abandoned building was named after WWII soldier General Simon Buckner. Today it sits gated off and completely abandoned. What's inside? Probably only looming spirits from the past.
5. Igloo City Hotel – Cantwell
This old abandoned hotel that was never fully completed sits off the George Parks Highway on the way to Denali National Park from Anchorage. Those who drive by at nighttime report seeing odd shadows inside and even hearing noises when they stop to further observe.
6. Birch Hill Cemetery – Fairbanks
It is at this very location that many have reported seeing a little girl wearing an early 1900s white dress, a floating black figure lingering around the graves and a little boy dressed as if from the 1920s. We suppose it makes sense considering it is a cemetery with many bodies that sit deep in the ground beneath.
7. Ketchikan High School – Ketchikan
Here is where a young high school student fell from the catwalk above the stage in the 1940s. To this day, people report seeing a shadowy figure and hearing his faint screams in the distance.
8. Kennicott Copper Mine – McCarthy
Ghosts from the old territorial days are all around the last frontier, and this historic mining camp is no exception. There are even ghost town walking tours in the summer months that draw huge crowds from all over the world.
9. Sawmill Road – Sitka
Kelly's Sports Pub in Sitka (which is no longer in existence) is said to be where a woman got intoxicated and stumbled into the road before getting hit by a drunk driver and later dying. Even to this day it is reported that locals and visitors alike will randomly see the crazed woman running down the street at all hours of the night.
10. West Anchorage High School – Anchorage
It is said that there is a lady in white that haunts the halls in this school, and can occasionally be seen drawing the curtains open and closed.
11. In The Wilderness – Chugiak
There is an old story about a father and daughter in the woods who were out collecting wood for the winter weather. The young girl accidentally picked up the ax and dropped it on herself, killing herself instantly. The father later froze to death as he gripped her body tightly and didn't let go, even into the night.
12. Kenai Cemetery – Kenai
Many locals and visitors alike have reported seeing an old man named Author here. He is said to appear to be walking around tending to the graves in the middle of the night. The old unmarked graves at the back of the cemetery are said to be from those who came to the last frontier during the gold rush era.
13. Wendy Williamson Auditorium – Anchorage
It might be the nearby psychiatric ward or the youth correctional facility that add to the ominous nature surrounding the rumors that the Wendy Williamson Auditorium is haunted. But we think the countless number of people that report seeing props fly off of furniture out of nowhere, stage-lights shatter and odd unexplained shadows drifting across walls that is really the proof in the pudding that this place has some wild spirits looming about.
