Kodiak is a small city on an isle of the same name, the largest island in Alaska. The population is about 6000 and the town is a popular destination for travelers.
This strikingly lovely town is on the eastern side of Kodiak Island with a chilly climate year-round. Salmon, halibut, Kodiak bear, elk, Sitka deer (black tail), and mountain goats are all plentiful on the island.
This breathtaking island has been inhabited by the Alutiiq natives for over 7,000 years. It's now a hub for commercial fishing and travel in the area.
The island also has a rich history of Russian culture from the 18th century settlement of the island before it became a U.S. territory.
The downtown area is charming with classic seaside architecture and a lively downtown area near the waterfront.
The waters near the town are teeming with ocean life including harbor seals playfully swimming.
Bears are ever-present in Kodiak and all the residents are aware of basic precautions to live in harmony with the animals.
