Spend An Autumn Afternoon With The Mighty Musk Oxen On Their Farm In Palmer, Alaska
Musk oxen are some of the most durable animals on the planet. These stout animals excel in our frigid temperatures up north here in Alaska, and they are gorgeous to behold! The musk oxen farm in Palmer has a herd for you to see up close and personal so you can marvel at these incredible creatures!

The musk oxen had died out in Alaska before being reintroduced from Greenland in 1930. Since then, Alaska's herds have grown to about 4,000 wild musk oxen!

They have a long, wooly coat with a unique fiber called "qiviut" as its underlay. Qiviut is one of the rarest fibers in the world, and it is long, incredibly soft, and has one of the highest insulation levels on the planet!

These large animals are called "Oomingmak" by Alaska Natives, which means "The Bearded One." Their "beard" is eight times warmer than wool, and softer than cashmere!

Your tour will take you through this area and more on your scenic 45 minute walk. The guides are very knowledgable and you may even get to meet one of these great animals up close!

You'll learn all about these musk oxen on the tour around this amazing farm, including the natural history of the animal. The Musk Ox Farm is uniquely situated to tell you all about these animals, as this is the largest captive herd in the world!

They are open Wednesday through Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. There are tours at 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Adult tickets are $11.00, Seniors over 65 are $9.00, and children 5-17 years old are $5.00.
