From the Denali Visitors Center, head down the Taiga Trail a short distance to the trailhead. The Mount Healy Overlook Trail heads up Mount Healy from here.
The first section of the trail is through the spruce forest. As the trail rises it heads above the trees to 1700 feet. The hike measures 2.7 miles one way and is an up and back style trail.
After winding through the forested area, the view opens up as you follow the ridge. The hike goes part-way up Mount Healy and provides a truly gorgeous view of the foothills of Mt. Denali and Alaska Range.
The trail follows a series of switchbacks up the mountainside and the park management requests that you stick to the trails and not cut the switchbacks, as that can lead to erosion and dangerous conditions on rainy days.
Denali is an excellent place for wildflowers. This trail is best from June to August, and the wildflowers are most plentiful in June and July.
This is one of the steeper hikes in Denali National Park, but once you are above the tree line there are lovely benches to rest on and take in the breathtaking views.
Wildlife abounds in Denali, so you may come across bear, caribou, squirrels, or other wildlife. The Denali Visitors Center will equip you with all the information you need to stay safe and have a great time on the trail.
It is ALWAYS windy at the top, so be prepared with warm layers as you want to spend some time enjoying the phenomenal views and resting a little before heading back down.
Beyond the end of the trail there is an additional 1500 feet to scale to reach the top of Mount Healy. If you want to continue, do so at your own risk as the steep peaks and high winds have taken several lives over the years.
The Mount Healy Overlook Trail is easily accessed in Denali and a beautiful place to take in the grandeur of Denali National Park & Preserve. Next time you visit the park, stop by for this amazing hike and the inspiring views.
