They say that sometimes the greatest things come in the tiniest packages, and Homer, Alaska is truly the proof in the pudding. From the very first pullout when you come up over the hill off of the Sterling Hwy and are approaching this spectacular town, the views will immediately blow you away. Massive snow-capped mountains, a stellar glacier and endless beauty greets you from all around.
For most first-timers to the town of Homer, the "spit" is the first bucket list item to check off. Drive down this 4.5-mile long piece of land jutting out into Kachemak Bay.

If you brought your four-legged best friend with you, let him out to splash in the ocean while enjoying a long walk on the beautiful beach.

First things first - you must eat. Two Sisters Bakery is an iconic little spot located (off the spit) in a tucked away location on E Bunnell Ave. Enjoy delicious baked goods and a variety of fresh, healthy breakfast items in this cozy little spot.
As Homer is dubbed as the "Halibut Fishing Capital of the World," it's only a given that most people who come here take advantage of the incredible saltwater opportuntieis. The best thing about Homer is that you don't really have to go far from the docks for your fresh catch. Get out on an awesome fishing spot within 20 minutes and spend the day reeling em' in!
If sea-sickness is an issue or you don't have access to a boat and just want to fish from shore, the lagoon right off the Homer Spit is an excellent spot for reeling in huge salmon.
Pay homage to those who have been lost at sea by visiting the Seafarer's Memorial on the spit. This ongoing project filled with bricks tells a long story of hard working men and women that have relied on Alaska's vast fisheries to provide for their families and to keep food on the table.

Walking the docks is another great way to get that does of beach-town air.
With friendly otters and adorable sea lions loving the no-wake zone, you never know what kind of cute little critter you might stumble upon.
And on the topic of wildlife, there are ample opportunities to view massive bald eagles in Homer. Keep you head up and your eyes peeled open. These critters are incredible to experience in person!

If you just wanna bop around town a bit, we recommend checking out the boardwalks along the spit. You will find lots of charter companies, kayaking and bear viewing outlets, restaurants, eateries, gift shops, art galleries and so much more.

Or you can head to the iconic Salty Dawg Saloon on the spit for lunch and a beverage, but you must be prepared to put a dollar bill on the wall with your name on it! Must be experienced to be fully appreciated. 😉
For those that love a good glass of wine, you're in luck. Homer has one of the best wineries in the state of Alaska. Visit Bear Creek Winery and Lodging for a taste of some delicious fruit wines, great service and a beautiful place to kick back and enjoy a breathtaking view.
For a dose of history, the Pratt Museum in Homer is a must visit. After you grab lunch, spend a while walking around and learning all about science, culture and art in Kachemak Bay.
