As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
Alaska is filled with unique attractions, but finding a rare gem like the ‘moose caboose’ at Alaska Adventure Cabins in Homer is truly a special treat. When you head to The Kenai, Alaska’s Playground and make your way down to the halibut fishing capital of the world, be on the lookout for this enchanting place located right off the Sterling Highway. On the bluff overlooking spectacular panoramic views of Kachemak Bay, you are guaranteed to never forget an overnight stay in this remarkable retired rail car. Best of all – they’re open all year long!
Located in Homer, Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska Adventure Cabins is known for having some of the most remarkably unique lodging throughout the entire last frontier. Of the seven cabins that they have available, you'll find that each individual property was designed to provide visitors with a sense of privacy, clean accommodations and phenomenal views overlooking Kachemak Bay.
Open all year long, this magical place is perfect for escaping the crowds and enjoying a tranquil slice of Alaskan paradise. The Innkeepers, Bryan and Karen Zak are some of the kindest, genuine people that you will ever come into contact with. They are dedicated to assuring that your stay is memorable and they truly want your overnight visit with them to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Perhaps one of the most unique lodging options here is The Moose Caboose. This fully renovated 54’ Pullman rail car comes complete with a full kitchen, full bath and a private bedroom with a large picture window overlooking stunning views in the distance. Throughout the inside you'll find cozy Alaskan decor and really neat Alaska Railroad prints on the wall. The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, pots and pans so you can come right in and whip up your very own meals, which is great if you don't particularly want to go out to eat every meal.
There is also a queen sleeper sofa in the living room for additional bedding if you are bringing the kiddos or enjoying a weekend getaway with some friends. Luckily no matter where you lie your head at night, you're guaranteed to wake up to the same spectacular view. There are also lots of extra blankets and linens as well as videos and games for you to enjoy. You'll feel right at home with all of the creature comforts available.
The lower level of The Moose Caboose is a totally separate living area. This setup is great if you are visiting Homer with another couple in which you both want your own privacy. Down on the bottom is a bedroom, full kitchen, dinette, full bath, living room, satellite TV and deck. Plus a totally private entrance.
The 30 foot deck is outfitted with lots of patio furniture plus a gas grill. This beautiful space is perfect for entertaining or just relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet that surrounds you. In the distance you'll find views of glaciers, volcanoes, Kachemak Bay and the Homer Spit.
The panoramic views from the deck are like something straight out of a dream. You will be totally and completely blown away. If you happen to stay on a crisp, clean night be sure to go onto the deck and look up. If you're lucky, you just might see the northern lights (Aurora Borealis) dancing above you. Although a somewhat rare occurrence, it does happen - and when it does, it's life changing! The Moose Caboose is also just minutes from downtown Homer and the Homer Spit. You're literally minutes from everything yet you are in a totally private place - the best of both worlds!
Best of all, you can visit this amazing place all year round! Unlike many lodging facilities in Alaska that are only open seasonally from May through September, Alaska Adventure Cabins stays open all year long so that locals (as well as winter visitors) can enjoy a magical winter-wonderland getaway.
