If you want to get out and hike a beautiful trail in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, head to Soldotna and find the Marsh Lake Trailhead.
This easy trail will offer you beautiful views of the western slopes of the Kenai Mountains and their reflections on this placid lake.
The trail is a rolling, wide path.
It was actually constructed recently, in the summer of 2017. It was built over the rehabilitated woodland fire fuel break from the 2015 Card Street Fire.
The trail is 6 miles round trip, and takes an average of two hours to complete.
You’ll pass through a wildlife habitat restoration area before entering into the old Boreal forest that surrounds the lake.
There are a couple of great spots to camp if you want to spend the night.
The boardwalks allow you to stay up above the muddy areas around the wetlands and marsh. This will keep you mostly dry, even during break up.
Keep your eyes peeled for the spectacular wildlife that makes its home in this area.
Many birds of prey, like owls, will hunt along the water’s edge. You may also come across a moose or two in your travels.
The trail is accessible all year long.
Cross country ski, snowshoe, or winter hike out to this beautiful lake. If you’re skiing, the knolls may prove difficult to a beginner skier. Otherwise the wide, relatively flat path offers a great workout on a snowy day.
The trailhead starts at mile 16.6 of the Skilak Lake Road.
You’ll be able to see the trail from the road. Pack some bug spray for the mosquitoes, and get ready to enjoy this wonderful stroll!
