In fact, the trailhead is right by the train station, and easy to access. This is a short, great hike if you want to spend the morning or afternoon enjoying everything Alaska has to offer.

It’s a three-mile loop that brings you up to the lake before depositing you back downtown. The views will take your breath away all along the way.

You start on a steep switchback for half a mile up the hillside. You’ll gain 793 feet total throughout the entire hike.

With the view, there’s plenty of spots to take a moment and soak it all in. Take a picnic with you and spend some time relaxing in the area.

It’s a wonderful way to while away the hours. The entire trail shouldn’t take you more than an hour or two.

Permits aren’t required, but please practice leave no trace, and keep fires in designated fire pits. It is bear country, so come prepared to keep your food out of reach of the wildlife.
