Located in Southeast Alaska on the 'Alaska Panhandle' is the beautiful town of Skagway. With a population under 1,000 year-round residents, this special spot offers a quaint and cozy community where everyone knows everyone.
That is, of course, in the wintertime during the 'off season.' During the summer months, the town completely transforms into a tourist hot spot as cruise ship passengers flock from all around the world to see for themselves what all the rage is about. In fact, nearly a million people flood into this tiny town each year.
With tourism being the largest industry in Skagway, you have to wonder what all the hype about. Well, Skagway offers some of the richest historic charm in the entire last frontier.
The Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park offers really incredible staging areas from the 1890s gold rush era. This historic hot spot charms the socks off of any and all walks of life that come to Skagway.
As you walk through the downtown area, you'll continue to notice a plethora of historic charm. From fur trading outposts to other historically intriguing blasts from the pasts, your eyes will wonder in amazement the entire time you're in this enchanting place.
During the summer months the streets are flooded with visitors winding in and out of the historic building, and during the wintertime the town becomes rather desolate and empty.
The White Pass and Chilkoot Trails are another big attraction in this unique area. Visitors can take the train around the narrow-gauge tunnels during the summer months for a charming local experience with phenomenal 360 degree panoramic views.
Or you can hop on the train and take a trek that will lead you straight into another country. This historic railroad was constructed in 1898 and is one the greatest doses of history that you'll ever experience in your lifetime.
Skagway's pristine location in a narrow glaciated valley is absolutely spectacular. Surrounded by mountains and inlet views, the natural beauty that can be found in this special area is like something straight off of a postcard. Be sure to add a visit to your 2017 bucket list!
