If you’re looking for the very best winter weekend getaway, the John Muir Cabin on the Winter Trail in Juneau, Alaska is a great way to get out into the mountains this season! If you're looking for a beautiful winter hike to a snug and cozy cabin in the mountains, the John Muir Cabin is a great spot to head to this weekend.
Located in the mountains outside of Juneau, you can find this cabin at the end of the Winter Trail. The Winter Trail actually begins at the Spaulding Trail, and branches off into another direction midway through.
This trail is a more accessible trail, as most of its length is covered in boardwalks.
During the summer, spring, and autumn months, the trail cuts through bog and marshes, so the boardwalks are important to stay dry. In the winter they provide guidelines of where to go so you don't sink into large snow drifts during your hike.

The trail is a moderately rated trail, ascending only about 1,545 feet.
The trail is 6.7 miles long, out and back, through some of the prettiest parts of the Tongass National Forest. Do make sure to throw some ice cleats in your bag in case you reach icy spots on the boardwalks on your way out.
Once you reach the cabin, you'll be stunned with spectacular views all the way to the water below on a clear day. You may even want to bring hot chocolate sip on to enjoy the sunset from your porch!
This gorgeous chalet-style log cabin is available for rent 365 days of the year, for $75.00 per night.
This is a rustic cabin, with wooden bunk beds on the first floor and two bunks that can sleep six additional people on the second floor. There is a propane stove, table and benches, and a wooden ramp to the vault toilet outside.
There is a snow shovel available for your use, but you must bring in most supplies to use during your trip.
Everything to keep you warm and fed: sleeping bags, firewood, fire starter, camp stove, cooking utensils, and even water should be packed in. Remember to pack out everything you've brought with you!
Reservations must be made in advance, to guarantee that the cabin is available and all yours to enjoy!
This trail and cabin can offer you a bit of solitude and beauty in an otherwise busy holiday season, although it's a great hike all year long. Whenever you decide to check out this cabin, you'll be blown away by the stunning views and cozy quarters of the John Muir Cabin!
