Juneau has tons of amazing trails, even close to the city. If you’re looking for an easy hike with stunning views, this family-friendly trail in Alaska is a short trip away from downtown Juneau and amazing to walk. Spend the morning taking in the sights on the Mendenhall Wetlands Refuge Trail, and see what kind of wildlife you can spot!
Right outside downtown Juneau is a beautiful wildlife trail that takes you through wetlands.
In fact, the total elevation gain is only 108 feet throughout the entirety of the hike. The steepest grade you’ll find is a gentle 5%, which makes it easy to complete. There are two short and slightly steeper sections of the trail at mile markers .3 and 1.1, so you may require assistance, or need to turn around at these points. Otherwise, it’s a wonderful trail for even the littlest members of your family.
Even cloudy and snowy days offer a particular kind of beauty. Bring some ice cleats if the weather has been below freezing, as some areas may have frozen over.
It is an out and back trail, and you can turn around at any time. Keep your eyes peeled for the magnificent bird species that make their home in this area. And during the summer time, you’ll come across a lot of wildflowers. It’s a beautiful walk all year long!
This is one beautiful trail, no matter what time of year you explore it.
