Between skiing, snowshoeing, and some of the best winter hiking, Alaska is a dream to be in the winter months. There’s one fantastic trail right outside of Anchorage in the Chugach State Park that you have to climb.

This is a steep, out and back trail. But the views all along the way are breathtaking.

The entire trail is around 7.7 miles, and it is difficult. This isn’t a trail to do solo, especially if you’re a beginner. The weather can change rapidly, and there is some scree to climb over at the top. But if if you make it, and it’s a clear day, expect to see an entire skyline of impressive mountain peaks in the distance. You may even get a good glimpse of Denali!

The backcountry in our state is incredibly beautiful, but can be very dangerous. Bring ice grippers for your shoes, plenty of water and food, and equipment that will keep you nice and warm. With wind, below freezing temperatures, and possible snow, you’ll want to be prepared.

It will help you recognize avalanche conditions and just may save a life! Alaska Avalanche School has a great program that offers this life saving safety education.
