If you’re looking for an awesome way for the whole family to experience winter in interior Alaska, Winterfest in Denali National Park is an entertaining three-day festival! This event takes place in late February and has games and food for everyone. Clear your calendar so you can make the trip to this weekend of fun!
If you're looking for a great weekend away into the wilderness of Alaska, think about heading to Winterfest in Denali National Park.
This festival is a hugely popular event each winter. In fact, this year will be the 20th anniversary of Winterfest!
Spend the long weekend exploring everything from local art and delicious food, to learning more about why snow is a critical resource for our planet.
There are also many educational events for kids of all ages, including guided walks where you learn more about Denali National Park's ecosystem, especially in the winter.
Spend three days doing awesome activities like getting to meet the working dogs of Denali.
It's the only actually the only national park in which dog teams are used to help to protect the park! You get the chance to visit with them at the Upper Savage River ranger patrol cabin, where you can warm up by the campfire.
Spend Saturday evening at a community dinner where you can enjoy a delicious spaghetti entree, before playing bingo with great prizes.
After dinner head out to do some stargazing. A NPS technician will give an astronomy talk before you start searching the night sky for constellations, and you may even see aurora borealis!
There's also a guided snowshoe walk where you can learn more about the area. You can also rent shoe shoes at the park if you need them.
If cross country skiing is more your style, there are many things to do on skis. Watch the youth ski racers on Saturday morning, or join in on the guided ski at Saturday afternoon on a three mile loop from the Winter Visitor's Center.
If you get cold during the day, you can swing by the Winter Visitor Center for campfire and S’mores.
You will have the opportunity to warm up, and even meet a National Park Service firefighter. This is such a cool way for the kids to learn more about the park and those who work within it.
There's also a snow block sculpting competition in the parking lot of the Denali Visitor Center.
There are so many fun things for everyone to do during this festival. This awesome event is held for three days from February 21st through February 23rd, and is free for all ages!
