If you’re looking for a great relaxing afternoon along the water, Captain Cook State Recreation Area offers beautiful beaches and stunning views of active volcanoes! Stroll the beaches on a sunny afternoon to look for beautiful rocks and shells, or look for some of the beautiful birds that hang around!
Captain Cook State Recreation Area is a gorgeous hidden spot in Nikiski, Alaska.
The area is a beautiful 3,500-acres right on the Cook Inlet. There are quite a few secluded beaches and gorgeous mudflats that are home to many wild Alaskan birds.
There's miles of beach for you to stroll along.
There's tent camping areas and lots of pretty trails that meander along the area. In the winter many people even cross-country ski on the trails.
Many people stroll the rocky shoreline looking for agate.
There's also pretty shells, interesting driftwood, and even sea glass for you to find and collect. The views of the inlet are stunning, including panoramic views of the active volcanoes nearby.
During low tide you can see a huge of mud flats beyond the rocky beach.
There's a beautiful picnic area overlooking the beach next to the Discovery Campground. It's a fabulous place to rest and enjoy a fabulous picnic.
There are so many lovely water features in addition to the beach/
Lakes, creeks, and a river all dot this gorgeous recreation area. There's also a campsite named after one of the ship's Captain Cook sailed with, the Discovery.
There is so much to explore beyond the beautiful beaches of this area, as well.
Many people love to canoe the Swanson River, and it leads all the way to the ocean. There are so many cool trails around the area too — one even parallels the river for a while.
There's even a delightful lake, Stormy Lake, located very close to the beaches. If you're interested in swimming, it has a great swimming beach.
There's a public dock for you to put your boat in to explore the beautiful area around these waters. There's plenty of parking at the local areas for only $5 a day.
