This Breathtaking Hike In Alaska Will Take You Straight To An Abandoned Mine

In the Wrangell-St Elias National Park, there are many amazing trails that lead to historic spots. The Bonanza Mine Trail is a long, steep hike that rewards you with views of the valley below you, including the towns of McCarthy and Kennicott. This absolutely stunning hike ends at an old historic mine, and every step is worth the end reward.
One trail, the Bonanza Mine Trail, is a harder hike that will reward you with unbelievable views. If you're looking for a trail that will challenge you, but make it all worth it, this hike fits the bill.
This wonderful hike starts in Kennicott after you pass the mill buildings downtown.
You'll walk parallel to Root Glacier as you head through the town. Once you reach the very edge of the historic buildings, the street will narrow into a path.

Once you reach the trailhead, you'll follow an old mining trail.
Follow the signs where the trail splits, and head towards Bonanza Mine Trail. Jumbo Mine Trail is also a wonderful hike, good for another day's adventure!
Once you get above the tree line, you will be absolutely stunned with the vistas that open up beneath you. You'll have incredible views of Mt. Blackburn, the Chugach Mountains, and the staggeringly impressive glaciers. Bring plenty of bear spray and practice bear safety while you're below the tree line.
The trail starts gradually in the beginning, but increases in incline swiftly. The last 1/4 of the mile is steep scree.
The total elevation gain throughout the entire hike is 3,943 feet. This is a difficult hike, but truly rewarding in both views and educational value, as you learn more about the history of the mines and the Kennicott area.
The old mine building at the top is in disrepair, and it is not recommended that you climb on, or venture inside.
There are many historic artifacts that litter the site. Take plenty of photos, but please don't take a souvenir. This is the perfect spot to take in the amazing panorama that surrounds you!
Next time you're in the Kennicott area, make sure to spend a day up in the mountains.
You can take the $5.00 shuttle from McCarthy, five miles away, to reach the trailhead. If you have a dog you will have to either secure other transportation, or walk up the five miles to reach the trailhead.
